The typical patterns for each of the four classifications of maintenance activities over a system’s life span are:

Corrective maintenance- It diagnoses and corrects errors in an operational system. In addition to the correction of the errors in the original operating system, corrective maintenance is needed t resolve issues created by previous changes of maintenance. The best approach of maintenance is to investigate, analysis, design and testing before implementing any solution. One can respond to the errors in various ways, depending on the nature and severity of the problem.

Adaptive maintenance- It adds new feature, capabilities or enhancements to an operational system and makes the system easy to use. The requirement for the adaptive maintenance arises from changes in business environment like new services or products, support for a new web-based operation but this system requires more IT department resources than minor corrective maintenance. Adaptive maintenance can be more complicated than the new system development because the enhancements have to work within the constraints of an existing system.

Perfective maintenance- It involves in changing the operational system to make it more efficient, reliable, or maintainable. Requests for the corrective and adaptive maintenance usually come from the users, while the IT department initiates perfective maintenance. During the system operational changes such as changes in the user activity or data patterns can cause inefficiency and then perfective maintenance might be needed to restore performance. In many of the organizations perfective maintenance is not performed frequently as they have limited resources so they prefer adaptive or corrective maintenance.

Preventive maintenance- It requires analysis of areas where problems or troubles are likely to occur so that they can avoid problems before they occur. Like perfective maintenance, the IT department initiates preventive maintenance. This maintenance results in the user satisfaction, decreased downtime and reduced TCO.

An explanation of the four possible approaches discussed on page 447 of the course text book for changing from one information system to another. Explaining the implications and the benefits of utilizes these four approaches at CQU on the Capricornia Car Pool System.

Direct Cutover

The direct cutover approach causes the changeover from the old system to the new system to occur immediately when the new system becomes operational. (Text book, p448) For CQU this approach is cost effective and is the least expensive changeover out of all four approaches. However this approach involves the most risk and for the CQU CCPS may encounter errors that were not foreseen in the testing of this new system. Implementation problems are at a higher level using this approach, also detecting mirror problems are difficult because there is the inability to compare to a legacy system. Major issues can result in loss of customers as there is no backup of the legacy system. The CQU must decide if this system is non-critical and if the direct cutover is the only option. Timing is an important factor that will need to be considered as customer information may be lost creating errors. CQU would benefit from this approach as the old system is a manual diary system and the CCPS is the first technology based system for its department.

Parallel Operation

The parallel operation changeover method requires that both the old and the new information systems to operate fully for a specified period of time. (Text book, p448)

Data input and printing outputs are run on both systems and comparisons are made until the company are content with the new system. For the CQU is approach is the lowest risk of all the approaches, if the new system have problems the CQU can go back to using the old system as a backup. If changes are needed to be made to the new system customers and information will not be lost. However parallel operation is the most costly approach as both systems are running together and additional workloads are created when data needs to be entered twice. Parallel operation approaches are not appropriate when the two systems perform different functions and involve a new method of business operations i.e. the CQU CCPS legacy system is a manual operated diary.

Pilot Operation

The pilot operation changeover method involves implementing a complete new system at a selected location of the company. (Text book, p449) During the pilot operation the old system continuous to operate for the company, once the system has proved to be successful it is implemented fully. This approach is a combination of the direct cutover and parallel operation. The difference of implementing this approach is this method is cost effective than the parallel operations approach, and there is less risk allowed than the direct cutover method. For CQU this method would be hard to implement as the CCPS only operates in the one office, but it may be useful if at a later date the CCPS were to be implemented at other campuses.

Phased Operation

The phased operation changeover method allows you to implement the new system in stages, or modules. (Text book, p449) This method is another approach with the combination of the direct cutover and parallel operation. However with a phased operation you give part of the system to all users. An advantage to the phased operation is it is less risk of errors or failures, and it is less expensive than full parallel operation because you only work on a small part of the system. The disadvantage of this type of approach is it is not likely to be able to be used on a system that cannot be separated easily into modules. For CQU this method would be hard to implement as the CCPS is a new system to a manual system it would be difficult to decide what modules to use and not use as the CCPS is only a small system.

This week as part of the weekly blog post i have to submit a annotated bibliography regarding assignment 2. The first reference that i found was

http://www.blackwell-synergy.com/links/doi/10.1046%2Fj.1365-2729.1997.00025.x

This article that i have found clearly relates to the innovation that i wrote for week 7 blog and is a part of my assignement. This article shows how question and answers are usefull for students in their cource studies. It also tells us why it is important to have question and answers in course websites.

http://proquest.umi.com/pqdweb?did=1265270831&sid=2&Fmt=3&clientId=20863&RQT=309&VName=PQD

This article from proquest shows how even high profile security councils use online question and answers to get responses to thier queries.

 http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2006/12/04/nine-questions-and-answers-students-want-to-know-about-social-media-before-they-enter-the-workforce/

This article that i viewed tells how online question and answers are usefull for students for different blogs of life and how students can get help from these online question and answers.

Q.1: What is the name of the innovation?

Answer: Innovation 1: Online course chat room. Innovation 2 : Chapter wise online quiz.

Q.2 : Describe the innovation and how it would work and the service it would provide to students and/or staff.

Answer:

Innovation 1: Online course chat room : There will be a chat room in the course website. The course teachers and the students are able to participate in the chat room. The chat room identification for the student will be their student id and for teacher it will be their name. Students are also able to do private chat in that chat room. It will work as other website based chat room. However, there will be all CQU students for only that course. Students are able to discuss instantly about the course with students and teachers. Sometimes student got many questions and they write it in the course group email. It also takes a long time to get an answer from any teacher or students. When students study and do assignments, they used to spend a long time on computer and online. Therefore, it will be helpful for student to know about that subjects more and more and they will also share about their knowledge with other student. It will help them to correct their problems. There will be also a link for update, where only teachers are able to post some information for students. Because teachers are not able to come online often and it is not necessary for teachers to come online regularly. They can only post some updates in the chat room e.g. assignment extension date. This chat room will help students to stay up to date with other students about assignment and study.

Innovation 2: Chapter wise online quiz Students have to do the chapter wise online quiz. There will be a direct link with the textbook chapter wise quiz in course website. Student should be starting the quiz by just one click. All students are able to do that quiz as many times as they want. There will be no time limit. It time will end the last week of the semester close. The online quiz database always keeps the highest score of the student, no matter how many times they tried or no matter what the score of the last attempt. Student are also able to see their score according to the chapter. So student will be not afraid to try the quiz repeatedly. They are able to try quiz in tutorial, at home any time when they read that chapter. This idea will help student for the final exam. If student do quiz more and more, they will gain more and more knowledge about their study and chapter.

Q.3 : How did you identify this innovation?

Answer:

Innovation 1: Online course chat room:

Actually as a student, when I study and do assignment I used to be on internet. Lots of time, I stay online with my computer to read course profile and other requirement of the course or website. If I get any trouble or confusion, I used to call my classmate by phone or we chat in the messenger. I feel that when we chat I can verify my idea and lots of new information about the course or assignment what I missed somehow. If I miss any lecture or tutorial, our classmate become our first preference to get the help of the missed class. It could be through phone, messenger or by meeting. Therefore, I believe online course chat room will be work for student.

Innovation 2: Chapter wise online quiz. At the beginning when I start to do the textbook online quiz. Its little hard to get the link for that particular chapter. We have to go through lots of links. Sometimes I feel its complex for us. Because we have to go to the textbook website, then write link and the version of the book link. Sometimes we feel impatience to start the online quiz, although we had intention to do the quiz. What I feel that it’s better to have start the online chapter quiz just by a single click from the course website. It will encourage students to do online quiz more and more.

Q-1What services/additions would students find interesting and useful on the course website?
Ans- In the course of Systems Development Overview, online audio video resource might be interesting as well as helpful for the students. This resource is more useful for those students who are not able to attend any lecture or tutorial due to any reason such as medical problem and also for the purpose of revision during exam timings. Some other additions like suggested answers to weekly questions should also be make available on the course website which help the students in improving their knowledge level as well as help them in improving their efficiency in the further assignments.

Q-2What learning and/or teaching strategies might improve the student learning in this course?
Ans- In the course of Systems Development Systems, the method of critical thinking is more useful than the rote learning. Rote learning might be helpful on the early stage but does not work in the long term practice. Therefore critical thinking is better as it means analytical thinking which helps in deeply examining the system which is an essential job area of the system analyst. Whereas special class for week students help student learning in this course but these week classes should start earlier but not after half of the course has gone so that week students are able to gain confidence in the course.

Q-3What journals might be useful to search for articles about educational innovations?
Ans- A journal is just like a periodical dedicated to a particular subject line and the research work done by the experts on that particular subject. Scholarly journals and industrial journals and journals published in business magazines are the best source for searching articles about educational innovations. Business magazines and industrial journals contain the latest information about the innovations in the field of technology. The technological innovations help in improving the technology and strategies involved in teaching practicing and strategies. But these journals are not helpful in taking the reference material as the views may varies from expert to expert. On the other side, scholarly journals help in providing reference for case work done by students.

Question. 1: What is the Capricornia Car Pool System?

Answer: The Capricornia Car Pool System is a typical Car Pool System Service provided by the Central Queensland
University to the Employees and the Faculty which includes:

  • The car pool vehicles
  • The Faculty and division vehicle
  • salary vehiclesThe Cars can be borrowed for a minimum of one (1) hour up to a maximum of two (2) weeks at a time and the hourly, daily and weekly rates all include unlimited mileage… The price charged by the Capricornia Car Pool is established in advance for a given period. The price for a car depends on the model and the rental period chosen, that is, hourly, daily or weekly rate…

Question. 2: What are the current problems with the Capricornia Car Pool System? Answer: The Current system of maintaining the Capricornia Car Pool involves a lot of manual labour… The Clerk(s) in the Facilities Management Division has to keep a track of all the Cars in the Car Pool using a Diary and Writing Pads and when the Car Pool Clerk is not in office then the Receptionist has to take messages and leave it in the Clerk’s Office/Desk, sometimes the messages are blown off the Desk by the Wind and go missing which in turn creates a problem to keep a track of the records…

Relying on Manual Labour to maintain the records creates a number of problems including:

  • Transcription errors
  • Slow down the process
  • Lost Forms
  • Difficult to track the cars
  • No Statastic available
  • Difficult to track maintanance

Question. 3: What information do you need to find out about the Capricornia Car Pool System to develop a detailed understanding of the current system?Answer: The Supervisor has asked to conduct a Business Requirements Scoping (which includes fact finding, identifying deficiencies and identifying requirements) and to create a set of Data and Process Models (includes process modelling and process specification):

  • The System will need to keep a track of all the Vehicles, making reservations and issuing invoice based on the pricing structure…
  • The Caproconia Car pool has two diffrent car models in its fleet of Vehicles:
  • It important to have information available on the option which may be fitted to certain cars such as , automatic or manual transmission,anti-lock brakes, and so forth by the capriconia car pool.
  •     Presently the Staff Members ring the Facilities Management Division and request for the car(s) and sometimes sends an email to book the Vehicle… Many Staff Members have requested the option of booking a car using a web interface which would enable them to book the Vehicle by raising a ticket on the web…
